The Pittsburgh Pirates didn’t get a lift from that home cookin’ like we hoped after a terrible outing in Baltimore – getting routed by the Marlins 7 – 1

FINAL: Miami Marlins 7, Pittsburgh Pirates 1

W –  Edinson Volquez (3 – 7)  L – Gerrit Cole (3-6)

Takeaways

  • The Joshes. Josh Harrison singled in the the first and doubled in the sixth. Josh Bell, pinch hitting for pitcher Jhan Marinez, doubled (fan interference) in the seventh. They provided three of the four hits the team had all night.

Throwaways

  • This was another disappointing game for Gerrit Cole. He gave up two doubles in the first, one by Christian Yelich, that brings Dee Gordon home and one by Derek Dietrich that scored Giancarlo Stanton and Yelich. In the fourth, Cole coughed up another double to Tyler Moore, allowing Dietrich to score. And doubles weren’t his only kryptonite, at the point he was taken out of the game in fifth, he’d given up five consecutive singles and the score was 7-0.
  • In the past, when Gerrit Cole pitched well, he got no run support. When he had an off night, the bats were there. Tonight, it was the worst combination of the two – bad pitching and no run support, the Pirates only getting four hits in the whole night.

Line of the Night

So for tonight’s game, we’re going to spotlight former Pirates, since the Pirates themselves were pretty quiet. Edinson Volquez, fresh off his Maddux, went 7 innings, threw 11 pitches, walked 2, struck out 8 and gave up 3 hits. His ERA currently stands at 3.41. He didn’t even look tired.
