Pirates promote Kyle Crick and Richard Rodriguez

Through 12 games, the Pittsburgh Pirates bullpen has been really the only sore spot on the team. Reinforcements are on the way as the team announced on Friday they have called up right-handed relievers Kyle Crick and Richard Rodriguez.

Clay Holmes and Josh Smoker were sent down to Triple-A Indianapolis to make room.

No 40-man roster move was necessary, still leaving the Bucs with 38 guys on the 40-man roster.

The Bucs bullpen ERA is at 6.97 so some changes needed to be made.

Rodriguez has been very good in Triple-A since 2015 with a 2.54 ERA with a 221/65 K/BB ratio in in 219.2 innings.

He’s thrown five shutout innings so far this season for Triple-A Indianapolis striking out five. Rodriguez’s strikeout rate was a career high 10.2 K/9 in 2017.

Crick was acquired in the Andrew McCutchen trade and posted a 3.06 ERA in 32.1 innings out of the bullpen for the San Francisco Giants last year.

Holmes will head back to Indianapolis where he can get steady work. He worked in just one game while being in a Pirates uniform, throwing two innings, allowing one earned run.

Smoker was terrible to say the least, appearing in five games, posting a 9.00 ERA.

It will be nice to see how both Crick and Rodriguez are used and see if they give this Pirates bullpen a shot in the arm.
