On Saturday night, WBC, WBA Middleweight and WBA “regular” Super Middleweight Champion Canelo Alvarez will look to add another world title in a fourth weight class when he challenges WBO Light Heavyweight Champ Sergey Kovalev.

Live Stream: DAZNThe 29-year-old Canelo is one of the best in the sport. Depending on who you ask, he likely falls anywhere between 1 and 3 on most boxing experts’ pound-for-pound list. He has established himself as the top middleweight in the world, and on Saturday he’s jumping 15 pounds to challenge an aging, but still effective 36-year-old Kovalev.
The height disparity is startling, as we saw at Wednesday’s press conference, but Canelo has proven capable of overcoming this kind of size disadvantage in the past.He currently owns a secondary title at 168 pounds after stopping a towering Rocky Fielding in December 2018.
He is significantly better as a pure boxer, and he’s always been known for his punching power. He’s been working with Hall-of-Famer Buddy McGirt for his last few fights, and that partnership has helped to rekindle some of Kovalev’s technical prowess. Because of the size, skill and experience dynamics, this is a very intriguing matchup.
Outside the ring, there are several storylines. There is drama under the Golden Boy umbrella. Canelo and GBP head Oscar De La Hoya are at odds, with the fighter recently telling Mike Coppinger of The Athletic that his promoter has no loyalty.
Canelo’s drama has somewhat drowned out the legal issues Kovalev is facing. Kovalev’s felony assault case goes to jury trial on November 25, and his accuser is also suing him for $8 million for the alleged attack on her and her dog.
The rest of the bouts on the card don’t look especially strong on paper. Undefeated lightweight Ryan Garcia will take on Romero Duno in the co-feature, and Evan Holyfield, the son of the legendary fighter Evander Holyfield, makes his pro boxing debut against Nick Winstead.
Canelo-Kovalev will have some stiff competition for viewership across the combat sports landscape. UFC 244 will run parallel with DAZN’s card on pay-per-view, and ESPN has a championship feature with WBC Super Featherweight Champion Miguel Berchelt defending against Jason Sosa. Expect another weekend where combat sports claims its share of attention on social media.
